  • Charis Books & More 184 S Candler S Decatur, GA United States (map)

This event takes place in person at Charis and on Crowdcast, Charis' virtual event platform. This event is free, but registration is required for virtual attendance. Please read the in-person event guidelines at the bottom of this page to be sure you can participate in the event.  Charis welcomes Becca Rea-Tucker in conversation with Kwajelyn Jackson for a discussion of The Abortion Companion: An Affirming Handbook for Your Choice and Your Journey, a warm, accepting, non-judgmental, and stigma-free companion for your abortion journey.

Whether you’re planning to have an abortion soon or you had one thirty years ago, whether you’re feeling relief or grief (or both!), and even if you haven’t decided yet and just want to untangle how you feel about it, this book is a safe and supportive resource. With an emphasis on self-compassion, it collects reflection prompts, affirmations, conversation scripts, logistical info, self-care tips, and much more to validate and support you no matter where you fall in the full spectrum of experiences of people who have abortions. Bolstered by beautiful illustrations and the caring, confident support of author and reproductive rights advocate Becca Rea-Tucker, this book will meet you wherever you are and offer guidance for every step of your journey.

About the Conversation Partner

Kwajelyn Jackson currently serves as Executive Director at Feminist Center in Atlanta, GA. She has the optimistic vision and pragmatism needed to lead an independent, non-profit, Feminist, multi-generational, multi-racial reproductive health, rights, and justice organization, providing compassionate abortion care in the South. Since 2013, she has led the expansion of Feminist Center’s statewide and national impact and deepened its community partnerships, leading the organization’s civic engagement, advocacy, education, and outreach teams, before becoming the organization’s first Black woman Executive Director in 2018.

A third-generation graduate of Spelman College, Kwajelyn continues a family legacy of racial justice, anti-oppression, and reproductive justice activism. She has a BA in economics and a MS in urban policy studies from the Andrew Young School of Public Policy at Georgia State University. Prior to joining Feminist Center, she spent 3 years as the Program Manager for WonderRoot Community Arts Center and 8 years as a Credit Risk Manager with Wachovia Bank's Community Development Finance Group.

A respected voice on reproductive justice movement building, Kwajelyn is often sought after on the national level. She sits on the board of directors for the Abortion Care Network, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and the Lola. Kwajelyn has been named as one of the 500 Most Powerful Leaders in Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine for the past 4 consecutive years. And in May 2022, she was featured on former President Barack Obama’s Instagram feed and stories for her work as an activist standing up for abortion rights and reproductive justice in the South, and for her remarks at Atlanta's Bans Off Our Bodies Rally. Kwajelyn is interested in opportunities to use a reproductive justice lens to spark dialogue, transform perspectives, develop leaders, and cultivate change.
